Soft Drinks To Cost More As Customs Proposes Excise Duty

he Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is proposing to collect excise duty on soft drinks, abolished in 1993 by the interim national government.

Appearing before a joint committee of the senate on finance and national planning on Thursday, Hameed Ali, comptroller-general of the NCS, said the federal government should lift the tax waivers for companies producing soft drinks within the country.

Ali argued that if companies producing alcoholic beverages and tobacco could pay taxes, those producing soft drinks could do the same.

“We have been pushing for the expansion of our own excise collection. During the (Ernest) Shonekan regime (in 1993), excise was stopped for carbonated drinks manufacturers, like Coca-Cola,” the retired colonel said.

“The only one approved for us are tobacco alcoholic beverages. The understanding then was that tobacco and alcoholic beverages affect the health of citizens and should be taxed.

“But we know that carbonated drinks are also injurious to the health of the people due to the high sugar content.

“Therefore if tobacco and alcoholic beverages companies are paying tax, the carbonated drink manufacturers should also pay.”

Ali also informed the lawmakers that revenue from import would reduce because of a number of agreements Nigeria has signed.

Customs would generate N1.2 trillion before the end of the year because it had already collected N830 billion as of the end of July, the comptroller-general said.

Also speaking at the event, Senate President Ahmad Lawan said there was need to look into why companies such as Coca-Cola do not pay excise duty.

“I don’t understand why Coca-cola for instance should not pay excise,” Lawan said.

“It is an established company all over the world and it dominates the soft drinks industry.”

Tanko Yakassai: Why Tinubu Will Perform Better Than Buhari As President

A former aide to ex-President Shehu Shagari, Tanko Yakassai, has insisted that Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was better than President Muhammadu Buhari.

Yakassai, who was a liaison officer to former President Shehu Shagari, said if, given the opportunity, Tinubu would perform better than Buhari.

He explained that the efforts of the APC National Leader in transforming Lagos State when he was governor were indications that he is more competent than Buhari.
Speaking in an interview in Kano, Yakassai said Tinubu was better at planning than Buhari and stressed that planning is what makes a better leader.

According to the elder statesman: “If you are talking of making a better president, to be honest with you, I think if Tinubu can get the APC ticket and is elected, he will perform better than Buhari. I do not doubt in my mind.

Go to Lagos and see what Tinubu did, when I went for an occasion, I took my time on the day of my arrival to go and have a look at Lekki.

In my opinion, Tinubu can make a better president than Buhari.

“What makes a better political leader in government is the plan. If you have a plan, you can do it; without a plan, you cannot perform,” Daily Times reports.

Trader Eating Excreta With Bread In Oyo State Caught And Arrested

Oyo State Police Command has arrested a trader identified as Emmanuel Egbu, for allegedly eating human excreta with bread.
Sunday PUNCH gathered that Egbu, who has a shop at the Sango area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, was caught by some persons around 12 noon on Saturday.

This caused traffic snarl as many people thronged the place to have a glimpse of the bizarre situation.

Eating human excreta is said to be the hallmark of Internet fraudsters, who also combine money rituals with cyber fraud.

Egbu, who has a thriving cosmetics shop where he sells Brazilian hair, was said to have been caught eating human excreta and bread. Those who caught him with the weird food combination were said to have raised the alarm, which attracted a huge crowd.

The trader, who is said to have bought a house and rebuilt it around the same area, was however rescued before he could be lynched. He was taken to the Sango Police Station.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Mr Olugbenga Fadeyi, when contacted told our correspondent that Egbu was in police custody.

He said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Sango Police Station had begun investigation into the incident.

The PPRO said, “The DPO told me that some people rescued the man from those who accused him of eating excreta and bread. They said they found some excreta which he packed inside a nylon bag. He was caught and taken to the police station.

“The DPO has taken over the case and the man is already in custody. He has begun investigation into the case and samples of what was found on him would be sent for laboratory analysis.[/url]

“He has taken the man’s statement also, and after the investigation at that level, the case will be sent to the State Criminal investigation Department at Iyaganku for further investigation. Investigation will reveal if he is involved in money ritual or not.”
