US Prosecutors Reveal How HushPuppi Defrauded Several American Firms

Nigerian Fraudster Ramon Olorunwa Abbas Aka Hushpuppi would have become $124 million richer if not for his arrest in Dubai on June 10, 2020. This was revealed by US prosecutors.
He made his initial court appearance yesterday in Chicago, USA, and he is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles in the coming weeks. 

He was extradited to the USA from Dubai on Thursday to face charges of conspiracy to launder millions of dollars from business email compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams.

The US Department of Justice did not name the EPL club targeted by the suspect and his gang. But it listed some of the alleged crimes committed by hi including a BEC scheme that defrauded the client of a New York based law firm of approximately $922,857 in October 2019.

Abbas and co-conspirators allegedly tricked one of the law firm's paralegals into wiring money intended for a client's real estate refinancing to a bank account controlled by Abbas and the co-conspirators.

They are also alleged to have laundered funds "stolen in a $14.7 million cyber-heist from a foreign financial institution in February 2019, in which the stolen money was sent to bank accounts around the world"

The US Justice department described Abbas as a "Dubai resident who flaunted his extravagant lifestyle on social media"

It said:

"Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, 37, a.k.a "Ray Hushpuppi" and "Hush", a Nigerian national, arrived in Chicago Thursday evening, and he is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

"Abbas was arrested last month by UAE law enforcement officials. FBI special agents earlier this week obtained custody of Abbas and brought him to the United States to face a charge of conspiring to engage in money laundering that is alleged in a criminal complaint filed on June 25 by federal prosecutors in Los Angeles."

"Abbas maintains social media accounts that frequently showed him in designer clothes, wearing expensive watches, posing in or with luxury cars and charter jets.

"The FBI'S investigation has revealed that Abbas finances this opulent lifestyle through crime, and that he is one of the leaders of a transnational network that facilitates computer intrusions, fraudulent schemes ( Including BEC schemes), and money laundering, targeting victims around the world in schemes designed to steal hundreds of million of dollars."

It described BEC schemes as "often involving a computer hacker gaining unauthorized access to a business' email account, blocking or redirecting communications to and/or from that email account, and then using the compromised email account or a separate fraudulent email account  to communicate with personnel from a victim company and to attempt to trick them into making an unauthorized money transfer."

Abbas and others further conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from other fraudulent schemes and computer intrusions, including one scheme to steal £100 million (approximately $124 million) from an English Premier League soccer club, the complaint alleges.

A criminal complaint contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

If convicted of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, Abbas would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years.

“BEC schemes are one of the most difficult cybercrimes we encounter as they typically involve a coordinated group of con artists scattered around the world who have experience with computer hacking and exploiting the international financial system,” said United States Attorney Nick Hanna.

 “This case targets a key player in a large, transnational conspiracy who was living an opulent lifestyle in another country while allegedly providing safe havens for stolen money around the world. As this case demonstrates, my office will continue to hold such criminals accountable, no matter where they live.”
“In 2019 alone, the FBI recorded $1.7 billion in losses by companies and individuals victimized through business email compromise scams, the type of scheme Mr. Abbas is charged with conducting from abroad,” said Paul Delacourt, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. 
“While this arrest has effectively taken a major alleged BEC player offline, BEC scams represent the most financially costly type of scheme reported to the FBI. I urge anyone who transfers funds personally or on behalf of a company to educate themselves about BEC so they can identify this insidious scheme before losing sizeable amounts of money.”

“This was a challenging case, one that spanned international boundaries, traditional financial systems and the digital sphere,” said Jesse Baker, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, Los Angles Field Office. “Technology has essentially erased geographic boundaries leaving trans-national criminal syndicates to believe that they are beyond the reach of law enforcement. The success in this case was the direct result of our trusted partnerships between the Department of Justice and our federal law enforcement colleagues. These partnerships helped dismantle a sophisticated organized crime group who preyed upon unsuspecting businesses. It is thanks to these partnerships that the American people can feel a bit more secure today.

Huspuppi was arrested along with along with 11 others in six simultaneous raids carried out by the Dubai police.

Confiscated from them were 13 luxury cars worth N2.640 billion (DH 25 million), 21 laptops, 47 smart phones, 15 memory storage devices, 5 external hard drives and 800,000 emails of potential victims.

The gang was responsible for Dh1.6 billion (about N169 billion) fraud involving over 1.9 million victims.

The FBI led the investigation of Abbas, and the United States Secret Service was also involved and provided substantial assistance. The FBI further thanks the government of the United Arab Emirates and the Dubai Police Department for their substantial assistance. in federal prison.This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Anil J. Antony and Joseph B. Woodring of the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section. The Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs provided substantial assistance in this matter.

A 6’3 shop customer murdered a 16 year-old boy and his 17 year-old friend for asking how tall he was, police say. Laroy Battle, 19, allegedly shot Charles Riley, 16, and Jasean Francis, 17, dead on June 20 after they asked him the question while buying candy at the store in Chicago. After the boys queried Battle about his height inside the store, he reportedly followed them out afterwards and fired nine rounds at them, killing both. Riley was struck in the back and left leg, while Francis was shot in the back, chest and left hand. Both boys were rushed to hospital, where efforts to save them proved unsuccessful. Neither knew Battle before their murders. Chicago’s Deputy Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan told WLS: ‘The victims commented because, since Battle is quite tall, and they asked him how tall he was, and, you know, hoped to be that tall someday.

Battle, who has a previous weapons conviction, faces two counts of first-degree murder. Francis’s aunt Latonya Pettit paid tribute to her late nephew, saying: ‘He was a kid. ‘Liked video games, snacks. That was his thing. He would walk into this hospital gift shop daily and purchase snacks.’

Favour apparently professed her undying love for her boyfriend, identified as Emmanuel, vowing to do abortion for his sake, in a bid to trend.

Favour, who quickly changed her Facebook name to “Mhiz Fevvy” on Facebook after her post went viral, posted yesterday, July 3rd, the now-viral post on Facebook.

According to her post, Emmanuel slept with her severally without protection, which made Favour fear that she may fall pregnant soon.

Her Facebook post reads; “I asked him. How many times did you come inside. He said just twice. I said what if am pregnant, I told him bby what if moi mum finds out. He told me den we will flush it Edidem Emmanuel dad mii. I’ll do abortion for your sake. Anything for you bby even it its to leave my parents. I will do that to make you happy. I will not leave you for another guy. If not for andrew liver salr you always give me, I’ll be pregnant by now.”

After her post went viral, Favour’s post received several backlash, which made her change her Facebook name from Favour Mathias to Mhiz Fevvy.

BALUFON DRUM

INTRODUCTION

Drums are used to produce rhythmic sounds for the purpose of entertainment or other purposes. In Africa, drums serve an important purpose in different ways in people's daily life.

They can also be used as instruments of announcement, warning, notice, danger or war. Drums can be used to cause anarchy and they can also be used to settle disputes.

The Yorubas believe that drums are an intermediary between them and Olodumare (God) and they use them as communication with God. There are times when barren women meet with drummers so that they can say prayers to God through the drums.

In Yoruba culture, the drums get into the mood to speak whenever the necessary rites are performed. 

History of the drum

The djembe drum is probably the most influential and basic of all talking drums. Originally, it dates back to 500 AD and was originally created as a sacred drum to be used during  healing ceremonies, rites of passages, ancestral worship, warrior rituals and social dances.

In Yoruba mythology, the origin of the drums can be traced to the gods and it is said that Obatala who is the most creative of the Yoruba gods must have carved the very first Agba Drum.

Agba drum which is a very sacred drum is only found in the palace, shrine or any other sacred area of the Awo initiates. It was only played by the chief priest or any qualified drummer but never by a woman. There are also other sacred drums like bata, gudugudu & Agba Drum.

Balufon Drum

The Balufon is another version of the ancient Agba drum. This drum is used during a dance dedicated to the deity of crafts and culture called Obalufon and the dance is very important to the people of Remo, Ogun state in Nigeria.

Historically, the drum has always been played only by the men and the women only danced to its rhythm. The men that played the drum did not wear clothes but only tied shaki or Aso Oke to beat the drum but that is not the case any longer

In Sagamu where I come from, the people perform the Balufon dance during coronation ceremonies and other special occasions even up till date. Incidentally, this dance was also performed during my father's Ewusi of Makun Sagamu coronation ceremony when he ascended the throne of his forefathers.

Indeed no king can ascend the throne without hearing the sounds of the dream that ushers him to ascend the throne.

I had to ask my father as the king (after necessary rites were performed) to invite the Balufon perdormers to showcase the sarced drum at Golcabash 2019, an annual event I organise to showcase our Culture & Tradition.

Instagram influencer Ramon Abbas, known as 'Hushpuppi' to his 2.4m followers, has arrived in the US to face criminal charges including one scheme to allegedly steal £100m from an unnamed Premier League club.

The Nigerian 37-year-old, who resides in Dubai, is known for posting photographs of luxury cars and five-star hotels on Instagram.

He was arrested in UAE last month and then extradited to the US when FBI agents obtained custody of Abbas, who faces charges of conspiring to engage in money laundering that is alleged in a criminal complaint filed on June 25.

Abbas made his initial court appearance in Chicago on Friday, and is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

On top of the alleged scheme involving a Premier League club, Abbas and others allegedly attempted to launder hundreds of millions of dollars through business email compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams targeting a US law firm and a foreign bank.

Abbas has said his Instagram posts are aimed to inspire others. "I post a few of these things so that someone can see my page someday and decide not to give up," he said in one post.

Woman arrested for inflicting horroific injuries in on her housemaid

The Police in Enugu have arrested a 24-year-old mother of 3, Mrs Ifeoma Ozougwu, alongside her husband, Mr Jude Ozougwu (40) for inflicting severe body harm on her 10-year-old female relative, Nneoma Nnadi.

Preliminary investigation by the Police indicates that Mrs. Ozougwu, a resident of Akomaeze Street, Thinker’s Corner, Enugu, was in the habit of brutalizing the girl with pressing iron, iron rods, nails and had also inserted pepper into her private part on several occasions

In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu, Mr. Daniel Ndukwe, said the arrest was due to an alarm raised by other residents of the area who could not stomach the incessant abuse of the girl.

The Traditional and supreme head of Yoruba race announced this adoption on his Instagram ''I got tagged on Twitter a few months back from a young man who made a brilliant pencil drawing of myself, in my appreciation for his art I invited him to my palace. 

The 17 year old superlative Samuel who is just about to graduate from secondary school has been adopted by me, his fees till his tertiary education will be taken care of by me, and he will be gainfully employed right here in my palace. Its clear that if we all work together as a people, irrespective of our special positions or privileged social status, we can deliver access to sustainable socioeconomic opportunity that suit our people. 

It was an endless gratitude for me meeting his mother who is a corn seller and who demonstrates an incredible heart of motherhood. She reveres in awe of the Stool of Oduduwa at the sight of me. King Mswati Of eSwatini Goes Into Quarantine

MBABANE:King Mswati allegedly went into self-quarantine shortly after declaring a State of emergency in the midst of the CoronaVirus outbreak, Lusendvo Fakudze, the Ludzidzini Palace Governor has confirmed.

But it is not clear whether he isolated himself within one of his Palaces in eSwatini or secretly flew out of the country as his private jet was seen leaving the country this week to an unknown destination.

The confusion regarding the whereabouts of the King comes in the midst of challenges perpetrated by the lack of equipment to fight the CoronaVirus as the health system has collapsed.

Speaking to this Swaziland News, Lusendvo Fakudze, the Ludzidzini Palace Governor said currently, no visitors were allowed to see the King saying everyone has been commanded to work extra hard, educate the public and make sure the Nation is safe.

The Governor did not disclose the whereabout of the King but emphasized the importance of taking the CoronaVirus seriously as per the command of the Head of State.

“Currently, no visitors are allowed to see the King, our only focus now is to educate the public about this epidemic as per the command of the King. The situation is bad Nkhosi and we hope God will be with us as a Nation. God has promised that he will stand by those who stand with him. Natsi nasihlala kuye angeke aze asilahle” he said.

The Governor urged the public to make sure they remain safe in the midst of the outbreak adding that there should be public campaigns to educate the Nation on safety measures. King Mswati, through Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini declared a State of emergency in the midst of the CoronaVirus outbreak and immediately went into self-isolation.

Tied Up Manatee Being Dragged On Dusty Nigerian Road Sparks Outrage

The Nigerian environment ministry said it will launch an investigation after a video surfaced of a group of men dragging a tied-up manatee along a dirt road.

In the footage the animal looks to be in great discomfort, flapping around as it is dragged by a rope around its tail for several metres.

The incident took place on 21 February in the oil-rich Delta region of the country, according to Blue Planet Society, an environmental campaign group who received the video.

In response to the video, Sharon Ikeazor, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Environment, strongly condemned the act on Twitter on Sunday.

She called it a “very distressing and distasteful” video, saying the animal being dragged to “a cruel fate by some ill informed youth”.

There are only 10,000 African manatees, which are largely herbivorous, left in the wild, according to data compiled in 2015 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Dubai police have extradited suspected fraudsters, Ramon Igbalode Abbas better known as Hushpuppi and Olalekan Jacon Ponle ‘Mr Woodberry’ to the United States, following their arrest by the force.

This was confirmed in an Instagram post shared on the official page of the Dubai Police.
FBI’s Director, Christopher Wray thanked the Dubai Police for their cooperation in extraditing the suspects who were accused of committing multiple money-laundering and cyber crimes.

The Instagram post reads;

The Director of the Federatal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray has praised the exceptional efforts exerted by the United Arab Emirate, represented by the Dubai Police General HQ, in combating transnational organised cybercrime including the rrecent arrest of Raymod Igbalode Abbas, known as “Hushpuppi” and Olalekan Jacon Ponle aka “Woodberry” who were taken down in operation “Fox Hunt 2”.

Mr Wray also extended his appreciations to Dubai Police for their cooperation in extraditing the wanted criminals, who committed money-laundering and multiple-cybercrimes, to the United States.
